about

Art doesn’t need an explanation but, instead, is better experienced. In the case of this album, hear it. When I listen to these songs, I think of all the jams from rehearsals that glimmered with potential and honed over time. Mainly, I think of the time Tony, Alan, Mary, and I spent talking, making jokes, and creating something we could be proud of, free from the demands most bands place on themselves. Giving ourselves space to allow the music to grow organically produced a collection of songs with their own identity under the circumstances of creating this album while spanning years, a COVID-induced break, and a dash to record this music. How does a band distinguish itself these days? How do you turn vocals, keys, guitar, bass, and drums into something new? My answer is through the shared tastes of the members and their personalities. Let me tell you a little bit about us individually.

Tony is a bass player of uncommon feel and power. His ability to craft parts that lock everything in and propel the band forward never ceases to amaze me. His playing always felt like it made my drumming better. He’s not just a solid bass player but a solid dude.

I was a fan of Mary for years and the different groups she had been in before we became friends and bandmates. Her voice is a power that borders on elemental. Her lyrics could easily exist as poetry on their own. Her keyboard parts are integral to every song. Sometimes, in the rehearsal space, I’d close my eyes as we played and feel her voice forcing me to wring every ounce of feeling out of me and into my playing. As a person, she is unbelievably creative, kind, supportive, and funny.

Alan is a consummate guitar player and arranger. His taste in creating parts, honing them, and finding the right effect is unparalleled. Alan’s ability to convey emotion through his instrument places him in the pantheon of my favorite guitar players. He’s always brought out the best in me on and off stage: a true friend. His playing has always been a source of inspiration to me in the years we’ve played together.

Me? My name is Rufo, and I play drums. The album is what I always dreamed a band I was in would make. I am exceptionally proud of this music and these people.

Alex Estrada and Princess Pearblossom recorded This album at The Pale Moon Ranch over three days in May 2022. Their taste and professionalism helped these songs become an album. The studio is gorgeous and surrounded by so much natural beauty. I can’t help but feel that it’s part of the soul of this recording—additional thanks to Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East for mastering the album and Erwin Papa for contributing to the album art.

What is there left to say?

Put on a good pair of headphones and listen.

Thanks.
